How is a fracture diagnosed ?

If you suspect you have a fracture, get medical attention immediately. Your doctor will likely ask you about your symptoms and perform a visual examination of the injured area. They may ask you to move the area in certain ways to check for pain or other signs of injury. If they think you may have a fracture, your doctor will likely order X-rays.  They can create images of your bone and reveal breaks or other signs of damage. X-rays also help determine fracture type and location. In some instances, your doctor may also order magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography scans (CT or CAT scan) to examine your bones or surrounding tissues.

Fracture treatment depends on the severity and location of the fracture.
Here are some common treatment options

Immobilization: This involves keeping the affected limb in a cast, brace, or splint to prevent movement and allow the bones to heal. The duration of immobilization depends on the type of fracture and can vary from several weeks to several months.

Reduction: This involves realigning the broken bones to their normal position. Depending on the severity of the fracture, this may be done through closed reduction (manipulating the bones back into place without surgery) or open reduction (surgically repositioning the bones).

Surgery: Some fractures require surgery to fix the broken bones using pins, screws, plates, or rods.

Pain management: Pain relief may be necessary during the healing process. Over-the-counter pain medications or prescription painkillers may be prescribed.

Rehabilitation: Once the bones have healed, physical therapy may be necessary to help restore strength, range of motion, and function to the affected limb.

While many simple fractures or broken bones heal without surgery, but complicated fractures need additional specialized care as quickly as possible. Unless patients are seen at a trauma center where such expertise is readily available, injured patients and their families are left scrambling to find an appropriate surgeon.
