Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopy is a procedure that is apt diagnosing and treating joint problems. Here the surgeon inserts a narrow tube through a small insertion of the size of a button hole that is connected to a fiber-optic video camera. This instruments has a small lens and lighting system that helps to give a clear picture of the joint. Here the light is transmitted through the fiber optics through the end of the arthroscope. The surgeon will be able to view the interior of the joint with the help of the miniature television that is attached to the arthroscope. It is used as a diagnostic or corrective procedure for relieving the pain arthritis of patients or just mending the ligaments.

Types Of Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is performed on the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, wrist, or elbow. The surgeon recommends it depending on the nature of the problem. Torn ligaments such as ACL, PCL and MCL are reconstructed using grafts. The torn cushions of the knee is repaired/removed and this procedure is called the meniscal repair/meniscectomy. Similar to this you have a repair or removal of the scar tissue on the patella or knee cap. Hip arthroscopy include removing bone fragments of the hip joints or pieces of cartilage which have separated from the surrounding tissue. In the case of shoulder arthroscopy repair of the rotator cuff as well as getting rid of loose body is also done.

Arthritis happens when there is a slow wear and tear of the cartilage surrounding the joints. Cartilage is that portion of the joint which allows it to move freely. Now when this breaks down the bones tends to rub together and this creates a severe pain as well as inflammation of the joints.
